Konami has a new key visual out for Suikoden: The Anime, and the interesting part is the headcount. The image went up on the project’s official X account on August 3 and was picked up by Anime Corner the next day. It frames five characters, not two: the protagonist Riliu, his best friend Jowy, Riliu’s sister Nanami, and the returning pair from the first game, Viktor and Flik.

Who is in the frame

The five match the top of the cast list on the anime’s official site: Toshiki Kumagai as Riliu, Shimba Tsuchiya as Jowy, Ayumi Hinohara as Nanami, Katsuyuki Konishi as Viktor and Yuichi Nakamura as Flik. Everyone announced after that, including Taku Yashiro as Luca Blight, Megumi Han as Leknaat and Miyuki Sawashiro as Anabelle, sits below that line.

Viktor and Flik being pushed into that top tier is the useful signal here. They are Suikoden I holdovers who carry the mercenary half of the war in the sequel, and putting them on the main visual points at an adaptation that intends to keep the army, the castle and the politics rather than shrinking the story down to three kids and a rune.

Two boys and a war

The official English synopsis is doing the heavy lifting for anyone who has not played the game.

The two of them looked up at the same starry skies, slept in the same tent, and believed in the same future.

Then the war takes that apart, piece by piece. Suikoden II landed on PlayStation in 1998 and has spent the years since near the top of everyone’s best JRPG list: a border conflict between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston, 108 recruitable characters, a castle you grow from a ruin, and a friendship the plot dismantles on purpose. It was also stupidly hard to play legally for most of that time, which is a large part of why the 2025 HD remaster mattered so much.

The bit that will be hard to adapt

Luca Blight, the mad prince of Highland, is one of the few JRPG villains who genuinely earns the label, and he earns it because the game spends dozens of hours letting him be appalling before you ever get to fight him. An anime has to do the same job in a fraction of the runtime. The 60 minute first episode buys some room, but the maths only works if the series has the episode count to match, and that number has not been announced.

What is confirmed, and what is not

KONAMI animation, Konami’s in-house studio, is producing, with NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan on planning. YUZO is chief director, Michihiro Tsuchiya handles series composition, Ryo Yamauchi adapts Fumi Ishikawa’s original game designs, and Koji Nakamura is scoring. amazarashi has the opening theme, “Kanashimi Sae Otonabite”. Broadcast starts in October 2026 on TOKYO MX, Kansai TV, BS Asahi and 32 stations across Japan, and the first three episodes screen early in ten Japanese cinemas for a fortnight from August 21.

Still missing: an exact October date, an episode count, and the one that decides whether any of this reaches an Australian lounge room, an international streaming partner. The on-air page lists Japanese broadcasters and nothing else.

Konami has handled this carefully so far. Producing in-house rather than shopping it around is a real commitment, and that is not a budget staff list. But a key visual is a promise, not an episode order, and I have watched enough beloved RPGs get compressed into one cour to hold off on the celebrating. The first honest read arrives on August 21, when Japanese audiences see three episodes ahead of everyone else.
