Two years of misdirection, coy interviews and studio-enforced silence around Sadie Sink's role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day lasted roughly one hour into the film's own world premiere. The person who ended it was not a leaker or a marketing exec. It was a musician on the red carpet who had just been told not to spoil anything.
What happened at the Dolby
The premiere ran at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 27 July. Asked about the film on the carpet, singer Steve Lacy answered the one question everybody had been dancing around for the entire press cycle. As TheWrap reported, he named the character, confirmed her alignment, and threw in a note of sympathy for good measure.

Sink has been rumoured to be playing Jean Grey since she was cast, and the studios spent the entire campaign refusing to say either way. Producer Amy Pascal had defended the secrecy as protecting the audience's sense of shock and surprise. Neither Sony nor Marvel Studios has issued a confirmation or a correction since Lacy spoke, which, as GamesRadar noted, is about as close to a yes as these things get.
Why it matters
A live-action Jean Grey turning up in a Sony-produced Spider-Man film, three days before it opens on 31 July, is a bigger deal than a casting reveal. Marvel has been circling a mutant reintroduction for years without committing to one on the record, and Jean Grey is not a small door to open. The first reactions to Destin Daniel Cretton's film have been strong, with Variety reporting that Tom Holland has never been better and that the film deliberately ditches multiverse clutter for a grounded story. Sink's arc is repeatedly singled out as the heaviest part of it.
Our take
Honestly, good. Two years of a studio treating a character name like nuclear launch codes, undone in seconds by someone who was just being friendly on a carpet, is the funniest possible ending to that campaign. The secrecy was never really for us; it was a marketing asset, and marketing assets leak. What is worth watching is not the spoiler but the silence after it. If Sony and Marvel let this sit uncorrected through opening weekend, it says the mutant reintroduction has already quietly started, and it started in a film Marvel Studios does not even produce.
